Cross-industry investment and technology initiative. Priority region: Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
Background
As gas fields mature, declining reservoir pressure and output may raise the unit cost of gas treatment, compression and transportation. Residual reserves and usable industrial infrastructure may nevertheless remain in place.
The initiative explores converting this gas into electricity at the field itself and using it to power modular data centers. The initial geographic focus is the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, with potential subsequent replication in other gas-producing regions.
Technology concept
The proposed configuration combines gas conditioning, local generation using gas engines or other technologies suitable for the actual low-pressure gas characteristics, and modular data centers. Backup power, cooling, control systems, telecommunications and information security are essential parts of the system.
The actual equipment, capacity, redundancy and business model will depend on site studies, gas availability and composition, connectivity and demand for computing services.
Objectives
- Bring residual gas resources into productive use and extend the useful life of existing field infrastructure.
- Explore an additional revenue source while developing distributed energy and regional computing capacity.
- Build cross-industry cooperation between Russian oil and gas, energy and IT companies.
Preliminary economics
The underlying industry article discusses a possible 30–50% reduction in data center operating costs compared with grid electricity. This is the authors’ preliminary estimate, not a demonstrated saving or a project-specific result achieved by the Cluster.
A future feasibility study must assess gas conditioning, generation, backup capacity, cooling, connectivity, capital expenditure, computing demand and operating arrangements. Any benefit from reusing existing infrastructure also requires site-specific calculation.
Proposed roadmap
- Pre-feasibility: identify potential sites, study gas pressure, composition and availability, existing networks and telecom links.
- Consortium formation: attract prospective gas producers, energy and IT partners and investors.
- Feasibility study: define the technical solution, investment and operating costs, commercial utilization and payback.
- Pilot: subject to a positive investment decision, design, build and commission a demonstrator comprising local generation and a modular data center.
- Replication: evaluate pilot results and develop an approach for other suitable fields.
Current status and source
The project remains an initiative. No site, equipment supplier, investor or operating consortium has been confirmed; the stages above have not been completed.
